A routine visit to my optometrist saved my eyesight.

Victor Coker – Meridian, MS

Victor, a long-time patient of Dr. Minh Duong, always made his annual eye exam a priority. During a routine eye exam, Victor’s optometrist noticed some issues with his optic nerve, so he ran a test for glaucoma. The tests confirmed Dr. Duong’s diagnosis, and he started treatment immediately to reduce the pressure in Victor’s eyes.

Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve – which is responsible for transmitting impulses from the eye to the brain. When Victor was diagnosed with glaucoma, he was afraid of losing his sight. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60, but can occur at any age. Victor was one of the lucky ones. Because his optometrist caught his glaucoma very early, Victor is able to keep his eye pressure in check with prescription eye drops. He sees Dr. Duong for a pressure check every six months, and so far, Victor’s vision remains stable.

Because vision loss due to glaucoma can’t be recovered, it’s important to have annual eye exams with your family eye doctor to increase the chances of early detection. With glaucoma, the best prognosis is an early diagnosis.
